“‘Night, Mother” Oct. 1-16, 2010

poster-web-800.jpg Written by Marsha Norman, winner of the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. A middle-aged epileptic unable to hold a job, with a failed marriage and a drug-addicted son on the wrong side of the law, Jessie has decided that life is no longer worth living. As the play begins, Jessie cleans her father’s service revolver and calmly announces that she intends to kill herself. At first her mother refuses to take her seriously, but as Jessie sets about tidying the house and making lists of things to be looked after, Mama’s sense of helplessness begins to build as she desperately attempts to dissuade her daughter from carrying out the act.
